HAVING A BLAST IN TOWCESTER - HaBiT!

Towcester Studio Band is delighted to announce the launch of a new major project which will enable us to connect with the community through a new outreach programme. This exciting project is supported by Lottery Funded public funding from Arts Council England and Foden's Band.

TSB will connect with the community through a new outreach programme. Sessions will be held where community members will learn new skills in music making. Together with the help of Northamptonshire and Rutland Music Education Hub - led by Northamptonshire Music & Performing Arts Trust (NMPAT) - and the very best in brass, Foden’s Band, this project will provide inspiration from the start to finish. Workshops to enhance skills and confidence, together with information for application during musical performance as well as daily life, will be provided.

There will be two concerts showcasing and providing performance opportunities, a new music commission and the chance to perform alongside Foden’s personnel. A video will be produced to chart the project for future engagement opportunities with community youth learning and research, throughout our areas music and arts scene.

Project activities

  • Regular sessions at local schools in conjunction with NMPAT to include ‘have a go’ sessions, working with existing brass and percussion students to provide information on what a brass band is and does.

  • Weekly TSB2 (Community Band) sessions to include and help develop new players.

  • Workshop for brass musicians of all standards given by Foden’s MD Michael Fowles & Foden’s tutors at Northampton School for Boys, followed by an evening concert given by Foden’s Band, together with Workshop Band, in Cripps Hall. This event is scheduled for Saturday January 13th 2024. Details on how to register will be posted on social media sites and TSB website at a later date: www.towcesterstudioband.co.uk

  • New music commission based on Northamptonshire’s Boot & Shoe heritage. This will be composed by John Barber, Foden’s principal trombone, and will be used in the workshop/concert.

  • Workshop with Dr Roger Webster (ex-principal cornet with Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Black Dyke Band and trumpet with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) on approach to performance and performance anxiety. This event will take place in TSB bandroom, Towcester on Tuesday October 31st 2023. Event registration details to follow.

  • A Video production, charting various elements of the project for use by TSB in future legacy initiatives, will be created and made available.
